Using Outlook 2010/2013 Remotely

Configuring Outlook for full functionality

For most people, when outside the university using the web client or off campus service should be fine for occasional email and calendaring.

If you use mail daily or need more than this, Microsoft Outlook is the best way to access Exchange, the university's email & calendaring system.

Outlook 2010 or 2013 give you access to full email, calendar, contacts & tasks securely from anywhere.

If you are using a laptop in different locations like an airport, cafe and at home and require access to these features then Outlook is the perfect solution.

For most users, Outlook is included as part of Office. All JMU staff have free access to download Microsoft Office, students can purchase Office for a nominal fee.  Click here to goto the home use software area.

Configuring Outlook to work Anywhere

Outlook normally connects using a protocol called MAPI. To use these features from outside the university or from a laptop safely and securely, Outlook has to be configured differently.

Microsoft calls this "Outlook Anywhere".

Exchange 2010/2013 users

Outlook Anywhere will configure itself for you automatically.

In Outlook choose Add an account, and select Microsoft Exchange if prompted

You will be asked for your Name, Email Address and password (see screenshot)

After a few seconds Outlook should configure most of the options and then ask for your username & password

You need to supply the LJMU domain name with this "USERS\" and then your username and password.

Outlook is now configured.

Configuring Outlook Anywhere manually

This is needed for Office 2007 installations.

Please follow the settings given. If configuring for the first name, do not click "Check Name" until the other 2 dialog boxes are configured.

Server name excasrpc.ljmu.ac.uk

Make sure “Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP” is ticked and click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.

Under Proxy Settings, URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange must be set to excasoa.ljmu.ac.uk

The section Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate needs to be set to “msstd:excasas.ljmu.ac.uk”

If configuring Outlook 2007 for the first time, click okay till you are back on the first screen with your email address. Click Check Name and if configured correctly, you should be prompted for your username & password.
