Using ActiveSync for Smartphones

Most devices can synchronise email, calendar and contacts remotely via LJMU's Activesync server. This service can be accessed directly by many of the latest phones & devices including iPhone, Android, iPad, Windows mobile & Windows Phone 7, and some Nokia and Sony Ericsson smartphones.

If you have a personal blackberry then you can also connect to this service.

Using POP/IMAP for email

Many smartphones, & devices support standard email protocols like POP or IMAP. You should be able to access & send your LJMU mail securely on most devices.

Configure your email client using the POP/IMAP protocol

Update October, as per ITS computing announcement, there have been some changes made to SMTP. For most users, no changes are required. If you are using port number 465 has been retired, you need to switch to 587 TLS or 25.

Any programs like Windows Mail and devices like phones can be configured to access your LJMU email account securely via either the POP or IMAP protocols. 

These programs allow you to read and write your email "offline" without any internet or network connection running so useful on laptops and older hardware.

In most cases now, IMAP or POP are no longer needed. Most phones will support Activesync. You can use full Outlook or the Outlook Web client for a very good mail experience inside or outside the university.

If you still want to use these protocols, the basic instructions for all IMAP clients are listed below.

If you are unsure on configuring hardware / software, you are strongly recommended to use either Outlook Web Access, or the Off Campus applications method of email access.

Please note: IT Services  (ITS) offer the following information AS IS - no support is available to users who use this information to configure their email client.

Configuration details

  • EMail Address: Your_email_address@ljmu.ac.uk
  • Server type: IMAP (POP3 access is NOT RECOMMENDED -- why? )
  • Incoming Mail Server: popimap.ljmu.ac.uk
  • Port: 993 (995 for POP3)
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ljmu.ac.uk
  • Username / Password: Your LJMU Username & Password
  • Outgoing Port: 587 (on TLS).

For POP/ IMAP,  authentication (providing a username & password) & TLS (secure connections) are required. Authentication & secure connections are also required for the SMTP server.

If you are accessing your email from outside the university, you may find that your ISP does not allow you to send mail on port 25.. this is to stop spammers and viruses.

In these cases, set the smtp port (often called "outgoing mail" or similar) in your email program to 587.

Halls of Residence users

If you are a user in the Halls of Residence but do NOT have an LJMU account, change your smtp port to 587 as recommended by your email provider.
